Holophon Listening Station January 10 - April 10
Winter by Gary Wasyliw
The quiet cold of winter is experienced as a part of the rhythm of seasons. Again our world changes, from the magic of the first snow, to its last dull remains at the onset of spring. It is all part of another trip around the sun. This winter existence is made bearable by modern technologies and power systems. We can embrace winter through its direct effect on the body, but also by immersing ourselves in its sonic imprint.
As above, so below. One annual sun cycle takes 365.25 days. Every time this frequency is doubled, it represents a higher musical octave. The frequency of the 31st octave of the earth’s rotation is 68hz which forms the base/bass note of this sound piece. This year, the astronomically calculated winter (winter solstice to vernal equinox) lasts 88.9 days, which divides the year tone into a harmonic of 84hz.
The electricity to create this piece came from the SaskPower, Regina South Power Substation. The sound of the prairie winter wind though the cables joins with the hum of transformers in audible frequencies, mainly at 60hz.
The frequencies of the earth, combined with the power system tones, and their octaves, are captured as electronic sounds. The power station is recorded in winter operation, as it supplies the City, and this audio playback, with electrical power.
